Dish Displays

Hello everyone!

I can't believe that it is almost the middle of the week already.  Where does the time go?

I decided to share something with you that I've had in my kitchen for quite a while now, but never posted. It's something that enabled me to display dishes while using them and added some personality to what would've been a standard builder grade kitchen.  I don't know about you, but that is just not my favorite style kitchen!

This is probably my favorite part of my kitchen.  I simply removed the cabinet doors (some even had glass) and painted out the cabinets to look like a hutch.  I chose black because of the other black accents in the room and I wanted a classic black and white kitchen with touches of warm wood and burlap.  This jump started the whole thing!

The only way for this to work was to keep all of the dishes white against the black cabinets and they had to usable too.  So, I have my everyday dishes in here as well as my china.  Our glasses are in here too.  I can't tell you how much easier it is to put dishes away from the dishwasher now!  I attached clamp lights above the cabinets to showcase the dishes at night as well provide task lighting while cooking.  I like these even better than the under cabinet lights!  The under cabinet lights quit working and needed to be replaced anyway.

The stove area was no exception.  I removed the cabinet doors and painted the interior black.  This works more as a display area.  There is a light above it too.

I used the space above the stove for pitchers, creamers and a soup tureen.  Again, I stayed with the black and white color scheme.

This is something that anyone can do in their own kitchen to give it some personality. It basically only costs a can of paint (a quart).

Now you know an inexpensive way to change the look of your kitchen without having to buy new cabinets!

Thanks for stopping by!

~ Kelly ~

  1. I love the look of open shelving and yours looks amazing. I have always wondered how hard it was to keep the grease/grime/dust off of the shelves as well as the dishes. Do you have a problem with that?

  5. I love it Kelly, it looks great, love the black and white too! I wanted to do that but hubby didn't so I chose above the frige, stove and on the one side of the bar which I painted black inside. I think it give a kitchen some interest:)

  9. Love the look of this, Kelly. Especially the black section ~ it does look like a hutch top! I see on the white side that you are a fan of cute little white creamers, too. : )

  10. I love that you removed those doors and even glass. Go Bold. One day we are ripping all the cabinets off the wall and hanging simple shelves with corbels at our yellow house.

  11. I once had kitchen cupboards with no doors. I loved them. It was a barn style kitchen theme. Alas, my house burned and when we rebuilt it I went with traditional cabinets.

I LOVE the clamp lighting and am thinking......WHY didn't I think of that?? I guess I was waiting on YOU to do it! I am so going to run with that great idea!! LD will be so relieved! MUCH easier than our 'other plan!'

  12. I like those open cabinets and admire you for taking the doors off. I like the look, but I know I couldn't handle this myself. Wish I could. It looks great--at YOUR house :)

  13. I did this exact same thing except I didn't think of the lighting...which is brilliant. I painted a separate bank of cabinets navy and have cream pottery displayed. I'd love to copy your light idea but there isn't any outlet. :o( Great post!

  19. I think yours is the most clever idea I've seen. With the interior painted black, the focus is on the dishes where it belongs. If I had more cabinet space, I would love to "borrow" your idea for over the microwave!

When I was painting our cabinets and the doors were off, I loved the ease of taking things in and out. Now I understand why it has become so popular. Thanks for sharing!

  25. It's beautiful Kelly. Black and white kitchens are very elegant and timeless. I love what you did above the microwave and stove. It adds a nice contrast. I don't think open shelving would work in my little kitchen but I LOVE the look.

  30. Love it! The white dishes against the black are really outstanding.

I can imagine how much easier it is to put away dishes. I felt the same way when we moved my china cabinet that I store our everyday dishes in to the other side of our kitchen. Every time I put the dishes away, I think about how much I love it. Bet it's the same for you.

  33. Love this! I'm looking to use clamp lights in my home (bathroom) so I'm wondering -- did you hardwire the lights in your kitchen? I saw that you just used the plug when you clipped it on your curtain rod (smart!) but I'm wondering how you installed these in your kitchen. And how have they held up for you?

    Thanks!

(PS: I think sometimes I show up as a no-reply blogger, even though I have changed every setting available, boo, so if that's the case, my email is iamjustlu@gmail.com)

    Thank you!
