Pillow Talk

Hello everyone!

As many of you know, that follow my blog, I love pillows.  I love pillows the way that Oprah loves bread!  I love pillows the way that Imelda Marcos loved shoes.  So, that means that I have WAY too many in my home.  Now, because I don't like a cluttered look when I decorate, I have a lot of them in storage.  My storage area (for pillows) is in my guest room closet.  God forbid anyone stay longer than one or two nights because I don't have a closet for your clothes.  Ha!  Since my pillow closet started filling up to the point where I could barely close the doors, I decided now might be a good time to re-think how I store my pillows.  And, a little cleaning out might be in order too.

Here was the state of my pillow closet before I got started.

Scary huh?

(Sorry these photos aren't very good.  I took them with my cell phone and an overhead light on.)

I decided on a plan to pull out all my pillows and take off any covers that I could.  Then save some pillow inserts and stack the pillow covers.  The pillows that don't have removable covers or are an odd size/shape, will be left alone.  I also got rid of about 11 bags of pillows.  Yes, you heard that right.  11 tall bags worth!!  They will be heading to the consignment store this week.

Here are some shots of the mess that was made to get this project done.

Pillow insert anyone?

This was a pleasant sight when I was done.

Now, to fill this puppy back up!

I placed all of the various sized pillow inserts on top and labeled the size.

Then, I stacked my pillow covers on the middle rack by color.

The bottom of the closet, houses the pillows that were left behind that I still wanted to keep. As you can see that space filled up quickly!  Gosh, I wish this bedroom had 2 closets.

Here is the new closet!

Now, it's not pretty, but it's organized.  That is what I was aiming for.  The doors stay closed on this anyway.  I can finally see what I actually have now!  I found some decorative pillows inside pillow covers too.  Oh my goodness!  Caraazzzy!!

So, now, I must know.  Do you have a pillow addiction like me?  And if so, where and how do you store them?  I'm curious if there are even better ways.  I may need to reinvent a different method if I buy any more pillows.  (Insert mischievous face here.)

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. You could use those space bags that compress them to a smaller size. More room and no dust.

  2. And I'm laughing because you and I have a serious pillow addiction. Maybe we should start a group.

  4. Wow! That is a lot of pillows!! No, I don't have a pillow addiction. I think it is because I don't have a couch to put pillows on.

  5. How funny. My guest room closet is used for storage also but it is a mix of things. You did a good job organizing the pillows. They do add so much to a space and it is an inexpensive way to refresh and update.

  6. You're a riot Kelly! I'm imagining a guest who might come to your home opening the door to the closet to hang clothes. Oops. Lol

I don't have a pillow addiction, although I do love them. The few extras I have I store in a trunk that is at the bottom of our guest bed.

  8. I added zippers to all the ones that didn't have them and threw out all the pillow inserts that weren't feather. Now I can see all of them and they are all so easy to change. I did a tutorial on how to add a zipper to a ready made pillow. It really is so easy. Two straight seams and that's it.

  10. I don't have a pillow addiction. It may be because we are alwa ys on the couch with our pups so moving them is a hassle.

You have so many gorgeous covers and you have things more organized now.

  13. It always feels so good to organize. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more pillow changes around your house, Kelly, now that you can easily see what you have. I definitely love pillows -but my true fetish is shoes.

  14. You're cracking me up with the "Oprah loves bread" reference! I'm like that too...I LOVE bread! I'd choose bread over steak any day of the week. Wow, you certainly do have a lot of pillows! I can't believe you got rid of that many bags worth! You have a nice storage system now. It looks neat and tidy and very easy to find what you're looking for. Good job!

  16. OMGoodness...I thought I was an addict! I love that there are others who enjoy pillows as much (or more) than I do! Great way to store the covers! Bless you Heart! Cindy xo

  17. You did a great job of getting this organized. Reminded me again of why I only buy pillow covers that are the size of the pillows I already have. I like to change the covers, but not add to the number of inserts. That cuts out half the storage.

  18. Sign me up for the group too! I just recently got rid of some excess stuff, mostly kitchen things. I planned on purging a couple of pillows, but somehow they found their way back into my storage trunk. Oops!

  19. But...but...but...Kelly----that first closet photo is just so much more FUN than the others. lol Love it- I have a pillow 'thang', too. Wonder why some of us are so entranced with pillows? lol I do think it is a simple way to change things up. xo Diana

  20. Ummm, yes, I would say we are soul sisters in this regard. I have two closets full (in the mancave) and lots of bagged up ones in the attics. It is a nightmare trying to find them. Of course, storage is an issue in my house anyway. I have tried taking off the covers, but then I never seem to get them back in the right cover and then they look weird. Every time I have a yard sale, I get rid of some. They seem to sell well. Consignment is a good idea. I think I might look into that.
