Hello Everyone!
As I mentioned in my last post, from the Country Living Fair, I bought some ornate candlesticks that weren't in the finish that I liked. So, I decided to give them a makeover. These candlesticks were the perfect size and style, just not the right color. Also, the price was great! I got both candlesticks for just $25. Ornate candlesticks can get very pricey. So, I snatched these up quickly!
I knew I could use a little bit of paint and wax to give them the look I wanted.
This is what the candlesticks looked like when I bought them.
Now, I will admit, they don't look bad in this picture. I think this picture isn't showing their true color. They had more of a verdigris looking finish on them (olive green and brown tones). My lighting for these pics wasn't the best.
So, I got out some French Linen chalk paint (from Annie Sloan) and painted them. This is a nice light grey color.
Then, I let that coat dry and went over it in a dark wax (from Annie Sloan).
I decided to enhance the carvings on the candlesticks by adding a bit of metallic gold paint to them. I used craft paint for that.
I have touches of metallic gold in other accessories in this room, so it made sense to add them to the candlesticks too. I thought it dressed them up a bit more.
And here they are on my fireplace mantel.
I am not a highly skilled painter, but I don't mind taking risks. So, I guess you could call this my "risk taking project". It's only paint, afterall. If I ever want to change them up again it will be easy with more paint!
Have you ever bought something before, knowing that you will have to give it a makeover once you get it home?
Thanks for stopping by.

Very pretty Kelly! The darker shade you chose works perfectly in your charming French home! I love using candlelight this time of year and through the colder months. Have a lovely weekend. xo
ReplyDeleteI do it all the time - and then usually sell the pieces.
ReplyDeleteYou did a fine job - looks great on your mantle by your gorgeous mirror.
Well done, Kelly! Hugs!
They turned out great! Yes, I buy things all of the time that I know I will have to paint, or sand or something :-)
ReplyDeleteI would be willing to buy anything within reason to take home and paint. One blogger about 4 years ago bought an expensive new beautiful bed and took it home to paint! Now that was ballsy. It turned out so lovely I almost applauded her sitting at home at my computer. I really need to go to the Country Living fair. Too far though. :-(
ReplyDeleteThose look great now. I had a chandelier (1995) in that same finish AND wall sconces. The last I knew the owners of that house still had that hanging in the dinette. I like the makeover and I am really liking seeing bits of gold/brass come back here and there. xo Diana
ReplyDeletethey really look great!!!!
ReplyDeleteYour candlesticks turned out great. I like how you used gold in some places. I will have to try that.
ReplyDeleteOh, very pretty! That event never comes anywhere near here unfortunately.

I like the touches of gold you added. It really makes the details stand out. I used to pass things up all the time just because they were the wrong color. Now I look at things differently, knowing what I can do with a simple can of paint. :)
ReplyDeleteKelly, your candlesticks look great! Love the color and the gold accents...so pretty with your decor!
ReplyDeleteAll the time! And also if I get tired of a color I have first painted, I paint again. I always says "look at the shape, not the color" and this always works for me. Your candlesticks turned out great! Have you ever tried gilding wax? Usually the chalk paint dealer has it.
ReplyDeleteThey look great Kelly..good job.I had a friend who I used to call "the queen of spray paint"..she would buy lamps, mirrors frames, etc with the idea of spray painting them some other color..
