My Favorite Faux Plants for Farmhouse Style

Hello everyone!

Can you believe it's September now?  This is the month that starts making me ready for Fall.  This is also the month when I think kids should go back to school.  I can't believe mine went back a month ago.  That's like summer school!  I think the way it was when I was growing up was the best.  It wouldn't surprise me if we eventually go to year round school.  Kind of sad! But.......that's not what I want to talk about today.  I want to talk about some of my favorite plants and their sources for a casual farmhouse style.  That includes modern and French style as well.  I love a mix of both actually.
I love a few plants scattered around the house for that homey feeling.  I am not a live plant purist.  So, if you don't like faux, then you can just move along.

1.
The first plant is one that EVERYONE has been after lately.  It's the quint essential fiddle leaf fig.

I bought mine from Michaels and placed it in the corner of my family room.  They come in all sizes and price points.  Here are a few other sources for it.

2.

Next, is preserved boxwood topiaries.  I love these.

They can get expensive so I try not to buy them at small mom and pop type stores because they cost too much.  I found mine from Target.  They sell a variety of sizes in rustic containers too.

Here are a few other sources for them.

3.

Another group of plants that are very popular right now are succulents.  These work particularly well in modern style homes.  They are rustic and sculptural in nature.

I like these planted in rustic metal  or classic terra cotta pots the best.  I found mine from Hobby Lobby.  I bought mine loose and just placed them in the pots of my choice. They are much more affordable that way too.

Here are some other sources for these.

4.

And last but not least, is a favorite of mine, the  maiden hair fern.

This type of fern gets me every time.  It's delicate round leaves and wispy stems are so pretty!  I've had better luck finding these live but they are not that easy to keep alive.  So here are some sources for some great looking faux ones without the hefty price tag.

If you find a faux maidenhair fern that looks real and is a good price, grab it!

These are just a few plants that I enjoy having around me.  Hope this inspires you to add some to your home if you haven't already.

Hope you all have a great Labor Day weekend!

  1. All great choices of plants. I love live plants at home. The ones I seem to be able to keep alive is ivy. And it is cheap so if it does die it is easy to replace.

  2. Thanks for the links! I shall check them out. I am no longer a real plant purist. I've been looking at faux plants recently. I found a couple at Hobby Lobby that I picked up a few weeks ago.

  3. Thanks for the tips, Kelly. I'm not much for artificial plants but sometimes the work. I bought a Peace Lily a few weeks ago. I came back to the lake yesterday and found it had little white spots all over the leaves. I think they were some sort of eggs and maybe came from where I bought it. Since I wasn't here for a week it may have just progressed. Out on the porch it went! I love organic things in a room. Maybe the fiddlehead fern?

Thanks and have a great holiday weekend!

  4. I agree with you about school Kelly. Starting after Labor Day is definitely the way to go imo.

It's been a while since I've had plants, real or otherwise. Leaving for months in the winter makes real plants a hassle. I'm not a big fan of faux plants, but like you I do think they've improved a lot over these last few years. I may consider faux plants for our front door down south since it's covered.

  8. I'm one that doesn't do fake plants, but I read anyway :).

I have to comment on the maidenhair fern. Actually they are pretty easy. You just need to know how tough they are. They are extremely picky about water, and can start to look like they are dying if they don't get their water when they want it (LOL). Never fear. You can cut a maidenhair fern down to the dirt and it will come back. I have a large one and I've done this several times. Last time, I cut it back and within 4 weeks it was bigger and fuller than before. It's a miracle plant! I promise you. Try it. Within 2 days you'll have new fronds.

The fiddle leaf fig is a trendy plant (simply look around blogland) and perhaps that is why they have not really attracted me as I am not a trend follower.
