Decorating with Old Salvage

Hello everyone!

I'm happy to report that the rain has officially stopped now.  Yay!  The sun has been shining and it feels good.

Now that the sun is shining again, I can see all the dust in my house!  So, as I was dusting away, I noticed that I haven't talked about some of the old salvaged pieces that I have in my home.  I love the character they bring to a room since they had a former life.

The first one is this old ceiling tile that I found at an antique mall many years ago.

It hangs on the wall above the tub in my master bathroom.  I've had it here for years and still love it.

It's old and chippy and interesting to look at.

The next item is in my bathroom too.  It is an old wall planter.  It once had rings on it to hold potted plants.  I guess it was intended to hang outside on a patio.

I have it hanging on the wall above the toilet. I took off the rings since I used it without the plants.

It is also chippy and romantic looking.  I have always loved this piece.

Lastly, in this same room, I have an architectural fragment perched on the plant ledge  above my vanity.

I have no idea what it was in its former life.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

I found it at an antique mall years ago too. This was at the time when I was trying to find old salvage.  It was just becoming popular then.

Downstairs, in the foyer, I have a couple of old porch columns  that I've used as plant holders.

I know I've already posted these, but they are my favorite pieces of old salvage that I own!

I bought these at an antique mall as well.  They are a matching pair.

So, if you're looking for a way to add something old and interesting to your home, use old salvage.  I like to use things in a way that they weren't intended and I think I definitely achieved that with these pieces. Also, all of these pieces, shown, have not been altered from how I found them.  I like that they have been left in their original state too.

Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I loooove architectural salvage! I'm looking for a pair of corbels for a shelf in my bathroom. The only problem is, it's seemed to become quite popular and as a result, expensive!

  8. Remember the days..... when a gal could go snooping around in antique stores and find salvage..... do you ever see stuff anymore? I rarely do here, or if I do there is some really really crazy price attached.

  11. My favorite is your ceiling tile!

I have an old mantle hung on my dining room wall with a mirror in the opening. I redid the whole room to hang this piece several years ago when LD and I were first married. I love it as much today as I did then. I remember LD asking me....."You want to hang the old fireplace on the WALL?"
    Of COURSE!

  16. Hi Kelly,
Lucky you to have not one but two of those beautiful columns!
They look great in your home. I like that you kept the original finish on all of them. Love the old ceiling tile in the bathroom. I have one as well that I had out in the garden last summer. It has naturally been distressed some more!
    All the Best,

  18. Well first of all I really like the tile on the wall with the candle chandy next to it~it looks so pretty. I love that kind of old tile, and i saw a lot of it at Brimfield, and it was kind of pricey! I saw all sizes of it. You would love to go there shopping for salvage. I like the old columns too~and that thing in the bathroom on the shelf is a part of a corbel detail for a porch probably.

  24. Love your salvaged pieces! One of my favorite pastimes is rummaging through salvage yards. I got my bathroom chandelier and my living room corner cabinets at a salvage place, and they are a few of my favorite treasures. Love what you've found and how you've displayed them :)

  25. Oooo Kelly. I LOVE old salvaged things too! Mine are always from my parents or grandparents, but I"m lucky my grandfather carefully took things apart and stored them. I love the planter!! I have a similar piece, though not old, that was a pot rack and I left the little baskets on for candles and towels. You have some great pieces, and I love how you have used them!
