Flowers and Veggies

Hello everyone!

This week is coming to an end very quickly.  It has been a busy one, but getting ready to be even busier for me next week! This weekend is my son's senior prom and next week is my other son's birthday.  Lots of things happening around here.

One new thing that is happening around here is that my husband has decided to plant a small vegetable garden in our back yard!  He bought all of the supplies and plans to get started this weekend.
First, though, I wanted to update you on how some of my favorite flowers are looking around here.

My climbing roses are blooming like crazy!

I wish they would stay this way throughout the summer.

And......my favorite of all is my pink peony bush!

Just look at it!

I may have to just snip this off and bring it inside where I can look at it all day.

There is one more bud on it that hasn't opened yet.  If you look closely, you can see ants on it.  Yikes!  I hope that doesn't mean anything bad!

Lastly, my flowers on the porch are just now starting to spill over the planters too.

As I mentioned, my husband is going to start a small garden for us.  We've never had one before.  This was all his idea!  I'm really excited about having one.  He plans on growing some tomatoes, peppers, and squash to name a few. It won't be very large.  Here are some of the materials he has ready.

The lumber for the frame.

The top soil to fill the frame.

Make that LOTS of top soil!

Some ingredients to make the soil ready for planting......

Soil Conditioner

Peat Moss

And no garden would be complete without a little compost with cow manure!

Gosh, I'm not so sure I want to eat what comes out of the ground with this stuff mixed in!  Hmmmm........

So, it will be a busy weekend with getting this garden started.  It will be fun keeping track of it though!

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Thanks for stopping by!

~ Kelly ~

Your roses and peonies look fantastic. Ants are part of the territory! Peonies dry really pretty, too.

Your husband looks like a serious gardener...he has all the right stuff. The cow manure will really help things grow! Unless you eat the roots, you'll be fine!!

Jane

Love your flowers, especially the peonies! Peonies also look great floating in a dish. All you need to do is remove the long stem....

I need to update my photos on my herb garden!

Good luck with your boy's prom and birthday!

Kelly, your flowers are looking great! Love the roses and peonies. Ants come with peonies. I just make sure that I was the flowers and petals really good before I bring them inside.

Yes, you are busy around your home, but sounds like happy good changes. Sure wish I had time for a vegetable garden. Can't wait to hear what you will do with all the bounty when everything is harvested!

Hi! Ants are necessary on peonies to stimulate the bud to open/bloom. Weird, but true! Good luck with your garden!

Your peony is beautiful. I tried them once but sure didn't get the results that you did.
Your climbing roses are so pretty. We planted some knock-out roses this week. We're excited to have some extra summer color.

Your flowers look beautiful, Kelly! I'm still patiently waiting to get some for here, although, I'm wearing down. Good luck with your vegetable garden. I did a small one, one year at our old house, and I had so many vegetables it was ridiculous!

My Peonies were always covered in ants, and I've heard they have a symbiotic relationship. Just make sure you shake them out before bringing them inside =) I love your flowers and am quite jealous! We are just starting to see buds on trees. I can't believe how far behind we are in Alberta compared to where we moved from (Vancouver Island). We are just starting to buy trees, plants etc to landscape our yard, though. Exciting!

Ants and peonies are normal...just rinse them off when you bring the blooms inside.

You are sooo going to enjoy your garden!

Kelly, your flowers look great! I love peonies, too! You'll get quite a bit out of your veggie garden. That's my husband's domain, as well. We had peppers galore last season! You'll enjoy it!

Kelly, I did not know we could grow peonies in Georgia. By jove you did it. Well done. Now I want one too of course. That veggie garden looks like a ton of work to me but will be worth it in the end. hugs, olive

that's great! this will be our 4th year having a veggie garden! make sure to plant cherry/grape tomatoes. We always had luck with those, and the good thing is that you'll always have a few ripe ones to add to your salad. We are working on a rain barrell this time around!

Kelly,

I adore your peonies. I think they are so pretty. I didn't know you could dry peonies? I may have to go out and cut some and try it!

Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Kelly: Beauty!!! Roses and the peony!! I know everyone has told you this but the ants are essential to the peonies. I heard that they help the buds opening. Are they still there on the opened one? I planted one peony last year and I though the moles got it because it didn't do anything. But this year the plant looks healthy but now buds or blooms yet. We shall see...Happy Thursday..Judy

That good Canadian peat moss will be good for moisture retention. Good luck with the garden!
Did you pick your peony? I'd have done so - it is so pretty.

Hi Kelly,

You must be sore after all that gardening! Hopefully, today hubby and I will go get a truck load of mulch and start getting our garden beds ready.
