"Oh yes I did!"
I made a big change to my fireplace mantel.........again. Yep. I didn't plan it at all. It just happened. It was as if a light bulb went off in my head and I had to try it out. Lo and behold, I liked it! Here is what I did.
Now, I know what you're going to say. What the heck?! There is a reason I did this. My husband decided it was time to get a new bigger flat screen TV for our cabinet. We had one of those old bulky heavy kind with the glass screen. Remember those? Yep! We had it for a VERY LONG time. So........now that we have a bigger size screen (which we love, BTW) my doors to the TV cabinet no longer fit. They had to be removed. So, rather than storing them somewhere (and my husband was going to try to retrofit them for future use on the cabinet) I decided to use them like people do with shutters, old doors, old windows, architectural salvage etc. I used them to decorate with!
Here is the new TV that caused it all.
We really like watching TV even more now, I must say.
There was a bit of inspiration for this as well. If you follow the Cote De Texas blog, you may recall someone that is featured quite a bit. Her name is Sally Wheat. She has the most beautiful home to me! Here is a picture of her family room.

I love the grey doors on each side of her fireplace! I love the white slip covered sofas and the little pops of pink in the room. So............now you know why I thought adding some cabinets doors for interest and a touch of grey color appealed to me.
Now I wonder sometimes if I should paint this glass door cabinet to match my TV cabinet on the other side. Hmmm............
I probably won't, but the thought has crossed my mind. For now, I'm enjoying this change.
Oh, and I know you're wondering about my dog picture that used to be here. I am going to be repaint the frame and hang it elsewhere. I will show you that after it's done. Bella isn't going anywhere! Ha!
So, what do you think? Have I lost my mind? Is it hokey to prop cabinet doors above the mantel or did I score a touchdown?
Thanks for stopping by!

I like it! I would add a mirror right on top of those doors. And I hope you don't paint the other piece it is lovely!
ReplyDeleteI really like it!!! The color combo is perfect with the mantel. As for the cabinet, I understand the "itch" to paint it, but as for me, I like the contrast of the wood with the other painted finishes in the room. Keeps it interesting. Oh, but that darn ASCP is so tempting, isn't? Whatever you decide, I am certain it will look beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThey look wonderful, why waste perfectly good doors? LOL!! I put gray shutters on my entry table and still love them.
ReplyDeleteKelly,
ReplyDeleteI love the grey and that fan! I think you can change your mantel as many times as you like because I think they are all wonderful.
blessings,
karianne
Kelly, It looks really interesting and a creative way to use the door.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't paint that beautiful bookcase armoire, though, because I like your mix of light and dark. I really like your arrangement and choice of things on the mantel, especially the vase on the left with the branches leaning across the door.
I like it to go with the style that you have moved to, but I love the dog picture, too and will wait and see where it shows up.
ReplyDeleteI like it Kelly, it's always fun to change things up. I am so glad you didn't get rid of that dog painting, I love it and can't wait to see where it's new home is. I like that other cabinet as is. It's so pretty and I like the mix of the light and dark together.
ReplyDeleteOh Kelly, you scored a touch down! I love the cabinets doors leaning on the wall above your fireplace. Hope you're having a wonderful day, Gail
ReplyDeleteThis looks fantastic, Kelly! I love this shade of gray. Definitely a touchdown!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
I am with Tonya. The doors look a little bare to me. And I like the other cabinet the way it is. :)
ReplyDeleteWay to go Kelly! That is so clever and a great way to make use out of them. Just beautiful! :-)
ReplyDeleteVanessa
I think you are a lot like your sister!

I love it, Kelly! I think those doors look great propped up and I love the inspiration picture you have here, too. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the change Kelly. Really fits in the decor nicely! nice TV btw!~
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea...we had the exact same armoire but changed it out for the flat screen...I think the doors look fabulous up on the mantel..so creative..bravo!!...I painted the dining room set that matches that armoire...if you'd like to see it, it's one of my older posts...Mariaelena
ReplyDeleteI like the doors on your mantel because the color of them actually adds a softening touch to the darker mantel. I think they also keep your mantel from getting lost between the two taller cabinets on either side. Love how you styled the rest of the mantel with the old books, the white shell, and the pop of pink. You did good!!

I think it looks great! It is nice to see people putting alternative objects over their fireplaces. Good work.
ReplyDeleteHi Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking the other day, how much I like Bella. She is such a beautiful dog. I do like the new look though as well. I know you will find the perfect place for her!
All the Best,
Christine
I like it...and I hope you don't paint the bookcase. I think rooms need some variety of colors...it is a beautiful piece!
ReplyDeleteIf I could find doors like that, except a little longer, I would get them instead of the shutters I've been on the look-out for to flank a picture over my fireplace. I think it's a nice change, Kelly, and something different.
ReplyDeleteI love this. The cabinet doors look fabulous in that color and with the pink flowers on either side that vignette just pops.
ReplyDeleteI like it! I have a perfectly good, perfectly pretty TV cabinet that I've moved into the guest room. I'd like to get the nerve to paint it, but so far, even after watching your sister paint so many wonderful things (and you too, now!) I am still a chicken about painting.
ReplyDeleteKelly I love it!!! I am the same as you...nothing stays the same for long around here...but hey thats how we keep it fresh...right!?!? x00x
ReplyDeleteKelly, what a great idea!! I love it! The mantel looks great!
ReplyDeleteI like it and how clever! I am sure you will continue to paint. I just know it.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Makes me want to rummage around in my storage room for some unused doors.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea....love it!! I vote to not paint the bookcase......

This is a great idea, Your home looks like the cover of a magazine. Just beautiful.
ReplyDeletehmmm...I like it, but Im wondering about lightening up the mantle? Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks pretty cool up there.
ReplyDeleteAnytime we can use something we have, it's a winner.

I'm signing back up to follow ya.
I love it! And I also love your inspiration. My eye was drawn to the doors as well. ok......and to the tiny tiny ruffles at the bottom of the chair slipcovers. :)

Looks great Kelly~I can see how your inspiration pic helped you to this moment! But I know it will only be a matter of time before that other armoire is painted grey...
ReplyDeleteYou scored, Kelly! Looks fabulous! What a creative way to repurpose those doors! And yup....I'd paint that cabinet in a heartbeat! :)

Great re-purpose of the doors Kelly!
ReplyDeleteKelly, I love it! I wouldn't paint the glass cabinet. What about painting the mantel? I know it's a difficult decision. I'm anticipating painting my maple mantel white.. I do love your new look. I bet it was quite a job painting the cabinet?
ReplyDeleteI want to get rid of my dark living room. I have a cranberry accent wall and beigy/gold walls. I'm stuck with my red couches for now any ideas?

Love the doors over the mantel. I think a small wreath hanging on them would be lovely.
ReplyDeleteIt's darling! I love the mantel! I like the tv cabinet too! I love the colors in your family room!

Your cabinet is beautiful painted Kelly. This room is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteOh that's nice! I really like it! I saw Sally Wheat's home last summer at the Parade of Homes in Houston. Her house is sooo beautiful.
