Our DIY TV Cabinet

Hello everyone!

How was your weekend?  Mine was full of white stuff!  We got some snow and ice and it stuck around all weekend.  We live on a hill with a shady driveway so it stayed icy and kept us from leaving the house.  So, today, I'm ready to leave the nest and spread my wings since I've been cooped up all weekend.  It sure was pretty to look at though!

I wanted to share the DIY project that my husband did for our TV.  We use to have a tall cabinet to house our TV in next to the fireplace.  But, when I decided to open up that wall by moving some of the large pieces of furniture away from the fireplace, we had to come up with a plan for our TV.  We thought about getting a brand new smaller cabinet, but then my husband realized that we could remove the upper half of the cabinet and replace it with a smaller platform to hold our TV.

So, he went to work in our garage building a new platform to hold our TV and cable box.

We also have a sound bar that he needed a place for.  So, he made sure to make room for that as well.  A custom box was the perfect solution for us.  It was less expensive than buying a new cabinet too!

I painted it to match the bottom half of the cabinet.

And here is the finished product all set up and ready to enjoy!

It no longer looks like the elephant in the room and fits the space much better than what we had before.

You know what I wish I could see more of now?  Whenever I look at magazines, or decorating shows, they don't usually feature a TV.  But, let's face it.  We all have a TV right? (Except Chip and Joanna Gaines.) I wish more rooms would show areas to put them so we could all see how the room flows for TV viewing.  I think it's an important feature since most of us have to deal with at least one in our home.  We live in a very electronic world, so it's silly to only feature rooms without one in it!
Ok, I'll get off my soap box now.

Hope you all have a great week ahead!

Hello Kelly- wow that is an amazing transformation! I'm impressed with the idea and how well you two made it work! You are so right- tv's are a part of life and pretending they don't exist is silly. Because our tv is huge and creates a very modern look I embraced it with a simple black tv stand for a unified look. I just realized ours is about 10 years old- can't believe it! I like how you changed the feel of the room by removing the large armoire too. Glad you didn't get a ton of snow. The ice is scary but at least where you live it will melt quickly and you'll be able to get out an about in no time.

I love the new look and the way you re-purposed what you already had! I wonder if you could post a tutorial in the future on how you painted it, as I love the color and finish!

Ya'll made a great looking cabinet.. I agree with ya on the tv issue. We have 4, great room and one in each of the bedrooms. I too wish all the home shows would show more realistic type room designs and decor.

That turned out great Kelly! Love the color too. I agree with you about showing TV's in homes. When I had the magazine feature done on my home a couple of years ago, they made sure they didn't shoot the wall with the tv. I have seen shows and magazines where they feature the TV over the fireplace, but I don't like a TV there, it takes away from the fireplace.

You are right....everyone does have a necessary evil...the TV...
I think Chip and Joanna are amazing...in everything...and it is very cool that they don't have a TV...amazing...
But we do...I hate it.
It is now the prominent wall "picture" in the room where it hangs...
I demand that no TV hangs in our living room (Hubby would love one over the fireplace)...Our living room is a separate room...the TV is in the family room....
What you have done is great! It is actually a piece of furniture....
We used to have a converted wardrobe for the TV....before the giant flat screen....
Great job.

You and your husband did a wonderful job recreating a spot for the TV. And you are so right, one shows where the TV is. I am a self-professed TV addict so I would find it interesting to see what other people do.

I've thought the same thing about all those home decor shows that never show a tv! And yes, we all have them and mine is on almost all day long, so there's no disguising it. I'd love to see more shows that deal with hiding all the electronic stuff. :) You did such a great job with this project! Your paint job is amazing and everything is balanced out perfectly.

I used to try to hide the t.v. but I've given up. They are a part of our life so me might as well learn to decorate with them instead of fighting them. I love the new cabinet. The room looks huge. It looks great.

Hi Kelly, you are so right...why hide a TV.....gotta sty real. That was a very creative idea and it looks wonderful!

I agree, Kelly. I wish they would show REAL rooms with REAL TVs in them. It is just crazy because you KNOW people have TVs. I always had ours in cabinets in previous homes but now the TVs are so big they no longer fit in standard cabinetry. So, there they sit now- in all their blank-faced glory when they are turned off.

You did a marvelous job of re-doing that cabinet to work for you. It really looks great- modern and not clumsy at all. Perfect- great job. xo Diana
