Fireplace Makeover

Hello everyone!

As I mentioned in my last post, I did something bold to my family room.  I painted my fireplace mantel black!  I also continued the color into the mirror above it.  I wanted my fireplace to make more of a statement in the room.  It seemed squished between the two armoires on each side of it so I think this did the trick!

I had been contemplating painting it black off and on for years!  I never did it though until now.  Since I have some black lamps and black and white pillows it seemed more appropriate.  But, I'm happy that it's still considered neutral and will continue to blend with the rest of the house.  If not, it's just paint!

I did it while my husband was at work and then sent him a pic after it was done.  I held my breath waiting to get an opinion from him.  You know what it was?  He loved it!

I used this paint.

I'll tell you something too.  I was all ready to go to the store and buy Annie Sloan chalk paint, but guess what?  They only sell it at specific stores and the one in my area was closed on Sunday and Monday.  So, they lost a sale!  I don't really think they should limit their distributors the way that they have.  So, I went down the street to a shop that sold this brand as well as Amy Howard's line.  I chose this one.  It's a soft black.

I distressed the raised edges around the mirror to accentuate that part a little better.

Did you notice something else new in the family room?

I brought in my white slip covered ottoman that I was using in the dining room.  It fits perfectly with my new chair!

This room seems more cozy now with the dark fireplace and mirror.  It has enhanced the focal point of the room.  I like how striking it is against all of the white walls too.

If I decide to remove some of my yellow accents, the black will still work fine with any other color I choose or play well with other neutrals in the room.  It's a win-win. This fireplace started out white (when we bought the house), and has been dark brown, and grey before.  I guess it's only fitting that it should now be black.

Have you ever painted your fireplace mantel before?

Thanks for stopping by.

~ Kelly ~

Kelly, That looks very good. Since the firebox is black already, that is nice. The soft black is nice. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

Wow Kelly...that looks gorgeous! When we had our den repainted a few years ago I had my fireplace brick painted and my mantel beefed up and painted as well. I'd really like to "plank" above the mantel but have not mentioned that to my handy man to add to my growing list of "wants"! We have a guy that does my honey do work and he recently bought a fixer upper and is working on that so I'm way down his list of jobs! Maybe this spring.....

I haven't invested in the Annie Sloane paint yet and doubt I ever will....just seems too expensive for how little I'd use it. I've heard about the one you used and think there are a couple more out there that give the same finish, but much more reasonably priced. You would think with all the exposure ASCP gets at some point her prices would come down some.

We are having wonderful weather here....can't wait for the winter to be totally gone.

Love it! I've been dreaming for 5 years of painting my fireplace. Can't get brave enough to do it. But yours looks fantastic. Wondering if you would consider doing a post featuring pictures of the fireplace with the changes in color? Would love to see the different colors it's been next to each other.

A while back in our other home I painted our fireplace black and then marbelized it. It came out great and I never regretted doing it, and I'm sure you won't either. It looks great against your white furnishings, and you know what they say 'every room needs a little black' :).

Oh wow! It looks great! I like how the paint has kind of a matte finish too. And like you said, if you get tired of it, it's only paint! The mirror looks wonderful too and good job on distressing the raised parts to make them stand out a little more. I consider black, grey, and white to all be neutrals, so I'm sure the new color will go with anything you bring into that room.

We often painted the brick..I like the color of yours..is it stone or brick..Personally, I like the black mantel but would prefer the mirror to be a natural medium to dark wood tone to match the bricks/stone around the firebox...and the wood on your table..just my opinion..I think it would show up better..You did a super job..

I like that you chose a soft black - it's such a pretty shade! It definitely makes a bold statement with all of the light tones in your room. You are brave! I love it! xo Happy Friday!

ps I bought a chair and ottoman from a yard sale a few years ago. I rarely show it because it's in the family room and gold floral -lol. I wrote down the brand and name in case I wanted to order a new slip cover for it. It's Mitchell Gold Alexia!! I might try to order a new cover in the next few months. Love your new pieces!!

I'm loving the look of the soft black finish next to the pretty stone on your fireplace, Kelly. It was a bold move, but it payed off! Your room is arranged so nicely, and the ottoman fits in perfectly!

Oooo, Kelly, I hope you don't feel down on one-owner shops! It can be impossible to be open every day with no employees. I've heard that is good paint, but haven't tried it yet.

I love it, Kelly! I'm a fan of black somewhere in the room to ground thing. The fireplace looks very "important" now. I think making the mirror the same color was a brilliant idea. Enjoy it!

Love the changes that you made. We want to redo our fireplace in our basement family room, but the whole fireplace is stone from floor to ceiling and the mantel and hearth are concrete.

Beautiful! Love the last photo. Great job! How in the world do you make the slip covers look so beautiful. I can't tell you how many I've purchased and they look like a clumbled up mess.
